The driller suspended fracturing operations at wells across the state in the wake of a blowout at its Atgas 2H well in LeRoy Township, Bradford County the night of April19. An equip- ment failure during fracturing allowed thousands of gallons of flowback water and natural gas to leak from the well head for two days, some of which spill- ed from the well pad and entered a nearby tributary of Towanda Creek.
Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, of a shale gas well involves injecting mil- lions of gallons of water, sand and chemical additives into a well to break up the shale formation and release gas trapped within. Chesapeake said Friday a valve flange on wellhead equipment was the cause of the accident and that 240 barrel s of f luid flowed off the pad and that a smaller volume reach ed the creek. The company did not state how it defines “barrel.”.
