I fell on my back onto a concrete floor in late December. Pain when inhaling and coughing in left rib cage, had an Xray then, diagnosed as 'chest wall strain', no fracture. Pain subsided over 2-3 weeks.
But IT'S BACK! And hurts worse than ever. May have been exacerbated by some exercise I was doing, but I was in NO PAIN at the time, and hadn't been for weeks. Only hurts when inhaling or coughing. Walking, lifting, twisting, pressure/touch to ribs cause no discomfort. And does not hurt when lying down, can breathe normally when reclining. I'm going to another doctor to evaluate next week, but - any insight as to what may be going on?
I'm a singer, and inhaling hurts! It was suggested by a chiropractor that an Xray could APPEAR as normal, but a bone could still be cracked. Opinion please? It hurt insanely at the time and at first I couldn't breath because it hurt, but then it faded and I was alright for the rest of the evening. Then after I got home and went to bed, my side was so sore it kept waking me up in them middle of the night when I rolled onto it, or laid on my stomach funny. Now this morning its quite painful. It aches a lot, and hurts somewhat to take a deep breath. If I twist funny It hurts a lot, and applying pressure to the side of my rib cage nearest my chest, causes a sharp pain in the middle of one of the ribs. Yet If I push on that rib it's not nearly as sore as that sharp pain. Is there a chance the rib is cracked, Or is it just badly bruised?
There is no visible bruising on the skin. I was punched in the left side several months a go 5th intercostalspcae midclavicular line the punch was a morth south blow. There is a muscle that goes from the sternum to the left side that seems engorged tough it looks like a snake under the skin.

This is not conducive to proper gas exchange so the first intervention is to encourage deep breathing. Complications from shallow or inadequate breathing can include pneumonia, infection, collapsed lungs, and feeling faint. The patient can be given an incentive spirometer to encourage this: the patient’s breaths are measured while breathing through a connecting tube on a portable device.If the patient hears a grating sound with breathing or movement, they must seek medical attention. This could be a potentially fatal condition where a portion of the chest wall moves separately than the rest of the chest and lungs – something that may happen if the pat ient has multiple breaks in adjacent ribs and.One of the other symptoms felt after a fracture is rib pain with movement. Core exercises shown by a physical therapist can help gradually strengthen your back and abdominal muscles to strengthen the torso, especially needed on contact sports.Gentle stretching to the shoulder and trunk can help expand your chest cavity and may make breathing and moving easier.
Stretching may also alleviate pain that is referred to the back or shoulders from the rib fracture, or pain from wearing an arm sling.For patients who are frail and elderly, physical therapy can help the patient walk and normalize some function with a rib fracture. A physical therapist can train the patient to transfer between bed and chairs safely, while observing precautions that make the rib pain worse. A PT can also help with managing comorbidities like osteoporosis, diabetes, that may have indirectly caused the rib fracture in the first place via a fall or accident. To counteract the frailty, strengthening and balance exercises can be prescribed in physical therapy so re-injury does not occur.Fractures of bones take at least six weeks to repair themselves, so exercise patience. Pain modulation is important for comfort, and your physical therapist can choose to do TENS electric stimulation to help modulate the pain non-narcotically. The cracks may be deep or hairline in nature. Since cracked ribs cannot be held in a cast, they are left as they are to heal with time. The surrounding ribs and tendons protect the cracked rib from further damage, and also promote its healing. Cracked ribs gradually heal on their own, however, the person has to endure a lot of pain in the meantime. Hence, the basic treatment aims at reducing the pain of the sufferer. Strapping or TapingTaping ribs is one treatment option that was widely implemented earlier. The strapping technique is not recommended even though it relieves pain, because strapping the chest may inhibit lung movement, if the chest is not taped correctly.
Some patients have experienced lung collapse, after using straps, which is why this form of treatment is no longer promoted. Hence, if you must, make sure you always follow the correct technique for a rib tape. Moreover, always make use of cloth strips or athletic wraps to tape your ribs. ExercisesWhen the initial phase of severe pain subsides and exercise becomes possible, the physiotherapist will suggest various chest stretching exercises. Exhaling exercises are useful, because taking long, deep breaths, every hour during the recovery period, one can prevent the lungs from getting congested or catching pneumonia. This is because taking shallow breaths is believed to cause pneumonia.
Although taking deep breaths is going to be extremely painful, doing this will do a lot good to one's cracked ribs, as well as lungs.
